Democracy for Belarus!

Declaration of the Hungarian Europe Society*

The wave of protests in Belarus provoked by the fraudulent presidential election has been going on uninterrupted for three weeks. The Lukashenko regime is deploying ruthless police violence. Peaceful protesters who stand up for free and clean elections are brutally beaten and those arrested are tortured in police custody. While the German EU presidency has strongly and unequivocally condemned the severe crackdown on human rights and freedom of expression, the Hungarian government is sheltering behind the Polish government’s position, dressed up as a Visegrad agreement, rather than explicitly rejecting the Belarus regime's harsh actions. The Hungarian Europe Society calls on the Hungarian government to stand foursquare behind common European and democratic values, to condemn police abuses and violence against peaceful protesters, to support the introduction of EU sanctions against the regime of the Belarusian dictator in order to enforce new, free and fair elections.
